INSECT-BORNE DISEASES

This chapter describes a number of important but rather uncommon (at least for the traveler) diseases caused by viruses, parasites, and bacteria. Unlike a common disease like hepatitis A, these insect-borne diseases often require the diagnostic and treatment expertise of a travel/tropical medicine or infectious disease specialist.

Diseases covered in this chapter include: Yellow Fever, Dengue Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, Sleeping Sickness (African Trypanosomiasis), Chagas' Disease (American Trypanosomiasis), Filariasis, Leishmaniasis, Relapsing Fever, Rift Valley Fever, Sandfly Fever, Scrub Typhus, Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome, Plague, Mediterranean Spotted Fever, Tick-Borne Encephalitis, Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever, and Ehrlichiosis.
