In 1999, more than 100 countries were considered malarious and this disease threatens nearly 40% of the world's population. Over 300 million acute episodes of illness occur every year, and it is estimated that over 270 million people are chronically infected with malaria parasites. Each year over 7 million Americans travel to countries where malaria occurs and 1,000-1,500 cases are reported (though many more go unreported). Malaria is the most important parasitic disease that you will face in most tropical and subtropical countries. A delay in diagnosis and treatment can have fatal consequences.
