Dr. Keystone graduated from University of Toronto Medical School in 1969. He trained in internal medicine in Toronto and at the University of Michigan Medical Center. After obtaining his FRCPC, he studied at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he received his M. Sc. in Clinical Tropical Medicine in 1974. He then did field work in Africa and South America before returning to become the Director of the Tropical Disease Unit at the Toronto General Hospital from 1977 until 1997. He is Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, Director, International Medical Graduate Program, Ontario Ministry of Health and President of the Medical Alumni Association, University of Toronto.
He is past president of the International Society of Travel Medicine, the American Committee on Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers' Health (of the American Society of Tropical Medicine) and the Canadian society for International Health.
Dr. Keystone's research interests are in leprosy, travelers' diarrhea, intestinal parasite, and travelers' health. Most of his field research is done in South India. His claim to fame is being the first and last attending physician to make rounds at the Toronto General Hospital on roller blades.
